Autistic Burnout is a prolonged, cumulative state of nervous system, emotional, sensory, and cognitive depletion. It arises when autistic humans are forced to function in environments that consistently deny or violate their needs - especially when masking, emotional labor, relational misattunement, sensory overload, and the expectation to perform normalcy go unrelieved for too long.
Burnout is not a mood, a moment, or a single crash. It is a systemic collapse across domains - often including loss of executive function, speech, motivation, emotional regulation, sensory tolerance, memory, or even identity clarity. It is not simply “tiredness” or “stress,” and it is categorically different from occupational burnout or depression.
Burnout isn’t just exhaustion. It’s the collapse that happens when the system can no longer sustain the gap between what it needs and what it’s forced to do.
At its core, burnout reflects a profound mismatch between what our bodyminds need and what our environments demand. Autistic Burnout is not a personal flaw - it is your body’s emergency response to unsafety. And yet, we are often gaslit or blamed for it, or told to push through.
